After a 40-days-long lockdown so far, the
Home Ministry has now given the nod for migrants, tourists and
students stranded in different states to be allowed to travel via road.
The decision taken after 5 weeks of lockdown comes as a major relief for students and tourists, apart from migrant workers stuck in various states. Hyderabad houses many such students at universities like
UOH, EFFLU, IIT, ISB and more. The lockdown has taken a toll on those who couldn’t travel back, with the
University of Hyderabad alone holding at least 250 such students from different states.
Abhishek Kumar, an MCA student from UOH says, “I was supposed to travel to my native Patna by train on March 20 but couldn’t due to the pandemic. I felt helpless and have been stuck here since then. I’ve been staying at the hostel but hoping to go back home as soon as possible. With the centre now providing a relaxation, it’s a relief.” Many students from colleges across the city echo his sentiments.
And then there are those students who hail from Hyderabad but are stuck elsewhere. Naveen V went to
Indore in March to visit his friends and go on a road trip, he has been there ever since. “The lockdown has severely impacted me. We aren’t even finding enough ration and vegetables here. This has to be a whole new low for me. I really want to go back home and even remain in mandatory quarantine rather than stay here,” he says.
The centre expects states to ensure the ‘homecoming’ happens in a controlled manner with proper precautions.
