HYDERABAD: Chief minister
K Chandrasekhar Rao instructed officials to
guide farmers to
cultivate crops in tune with food habits of people and crops that are in demand. The CM also instructed officials to prepare a report and submit it by May 5 after studying about crops other than paddy, which would be beneficial to farmers.
He asked officials to encourage farmers to grow fine variety paddy and construct godowns and cold storage. KCR held a high-level review meeting on Wednesday on preparation of new agriculture policy.
“In the past, there was no availability of irrigation water due to lack of power supply and projects. Farmers used to cultivate crops according to their wish. Since everyone cultivated the same crop, there was fall in the price. Now, the situation has drastically changed and water for irrigation is reaching every nook and corner of the state. Due to 24-hour power supply, cultivation is taking place under the borewells too,” he said.
He said farmers are going in for coarse variety, as cultivation period is less, but majority of people eat only fine rice variety. This variety has great demand in other states and countries too. “Farmers should should be educated on this,” the CM said.
He asked officials to identify crops that would get higher yields, more marketing opportunities, good income and less laborious. Since it was decided to construct additional godowns, KCR told officials to identify land parcels. He said cold storage facilities should be incorporated in these godowns.
