Of the 103 cases reported on Tuesday, 81 cases are from the central region that comprises of zones such as Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Ambattur, Anna Nagar, Teynampet and Kodambakkam. North and central regions have reported only 11 cases each. On Monday, 47 cases were reported in the city, of which 31 are from the central region. At least 41 new cases were reported from Thiru Vi Ka Nagar alone on Wednesday alone.

When contacted, a senior official in the Central region said that most of the cases reported in the central region zones had contacts with earlier positive cases. “All the 34 cases reported in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar on Tuesday had contact with affected persons. Similarly, in Mylapore, around 13 cases reported have earlier contacts,” the official said.

While admitting the sudden surge in the number of cases, the official explained that most of the new cases are from the containment zones.“We are preventing the entry and exit from the containment zones. However, residents inside the containment zones are moving freely,” he added.

Despite remaining hotspot for several days, the Royapuram zone in North region has managed to flatten the curve as only 6 persons were tested positive on Tuesday. However, the zone tops the total number of cases as on April 29 morning with 164 cases and five deaths.
