Dave Helmer, Executive Director, Park Commission said in a statement that the Morris County Park Commission understands the importance of providing access to parks but is also responsible for the safety of park staff and patrons. He mentioned that commission also has the stewardship responsibility of protecting the natural, cultural and historic resources under its care. He urged residents to do their best while accessing the important resources by respecting fellow park visitors as well as the park resources.
All parks, grounds, and trails will be opened but with reduced parking other than some exceptions. Parks and trails are also subjected to remain closed for certain periods of time for park maintenance and park project purposes without prior announcement. All public buildings, restrooms, playgrounds, picnic shelters, tents, athletic fields, and play areas will remain closed.
Parking lot, grounds and trails of Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center will be closed. The move has been taken as it is difficult to maintain a 6-foot distance between trail users due to the nature of the trail system including a raised boardwalk, narrow trails, and sensitive natural environment. The parking area of Central Park of Morris County-Ice Pond or Disc Golf Course will also be closed but trails will remain open.
Lee’s Marina will maintain its current operational parameters. The commission will consider allowing a maximum of 25 prepaid daily launches per day. Seaton Hackney Stables will reopen in the near future after a standard operating procedure is developed by the concessionaire for the county’s equestrian facility.
In addition, all programs, permits, and events in these areas remain canceled until May 31, 2020. Strict social distancing measures are to be maintained during a visit to Morris County parks, facilities, and trails. Patrons have been asked to follow proper CDC protocol and behavior modifications to allow passive recreation in parks and trails.
All residents have been recommended to use any form of face covering. They have been asked to abide by Follow CDC’s guidance on personal hygiene prior to and during the use of parks or trails. Though public restrooms are not available, some sites may have portable restrooms. People have been advised to carry their own personal sanitary supplies. They have also been suggested to warn other users of own presence in trails and to step aside to let others pass.
Every individual should be maintaining a social distancing of six feet from other individuals at all times. Citizens have been strictly asked to refrain from using parks or trails if they are exhibiting symptoms of the COVID-19 virus.
