LUCKNOW: While this January was the ‘wettest’ in seven decades, now April 2020 is turning out to be a ‘cooler’ one among the past 10 years.
According to available data, records from 2009-19 show that day-time temperatures cross 40 degrees Celsius towards the end of April. This time, however, the highest
temperature so far has been 38.6 degrees Celsius.
In fact, on Tuesday, the maximum temperature was 34 degrees Celsius, five degrees below normal, while the minimum temperature was 22.3 degrees Celsius, a unit below normal. Throughout April, maximum temperatures have been 2-3 degrees below normal. Similar conditions are expected in the remaining two days of the month.
The reason, said experts, could be attributed to back to back western disturbances (WDs) that hit India in April and low
pollution levels.
“WDs are a routine phenomena that cause thundershowers in winter and summer, but normally they get weak in April. However, this year, six-eight WDs have affected India and northern plains against an average of two,” said state Met director JP Gupta.
“Lockdown has led to drastic drop in pollution level, which might have contributed in low temperature,” said weather expert Prof Dhruvsen Singh.
