CHENNAI:
DMK president M K Stalin on Wednesday said the party, its
allies and farmers will stage protests if the Centre does not withdraw its decision to bring the
Cauvery Water Management Authority under the Union
jal shakti ministry. Stalin said the Centre's move would affect farmers in
Tamil Nadu.
A notification issued by the President of India on Tuesday said as per the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules, 1961, all river boards, including the Cauvery, the Godavari and the Krishna, have been brought under the department of water resources, river development and Ganga rejuvenation in the ministry of jal shakti. The notification is just an allocation of business, which means the authority will have to report to the jal shakti ministry.
“We will mobilise political parties and farmers in large numbers and hold a protest if the Centre refuses to withdraw its decision,” Stalin said in a statement.
Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami should immediately convene a cabinet meeting and pass a resolution pressuring the Centre to drop its move, he said.
The authority was formed in 2018 and it was under Union ministry of water resources as an independent body. “The authority was supposed to be an independent body, but now it has been brought under the administrative control of the Central government which is nothing but injustice,” said Stalin.
The Cauvery Water Management Authority was set up to share the Cauvery river water among Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Kerala.
DMK alliance partners have also condemned the Centre’s decision.
In a statement, CPI state secretary R Mutharasan said the Centre should immediately withdraw its decision and wanted the Tamil Nadu government to move court against the decision.
MDMK chief Vaiko said the Centre should immediately withdraw the order failing which a big protest will be held in Tamil Nadu.
AMMK general secretary T T V Dhinakaran has also opposed the Centre’s decision.
