RANCHI: State education minister Jagarnath Mahto on Tuesday asked Union HRD minister Ramesh Pokhariyal to clear pending dues of Rs 600 crore from the previous budget so that payments can be made to parateachers and the state government can carry out other activities.

We have demanded that the Union government releases the outstanding amount and have also insisted on timely payment of allocations, so that we can increase payments of our 61,000-strong force of para teachers.”
The state also demanded establishment of Kendriya Vidyalayas in the interiors of Jharkhand to provide quality education to rural students. Mahto said while the Union minister laid emphasis on digital mode of teaching, it isn’t easy in a state like Jharkhand with issues like lack of proper network and rough terrains.
Mahto also demanded the the Union education ministry comes up with national directives for concession in fees in private schools for the period of lockdown. He said, “I have been raising the issue for a long time and the Centre should issue a formal order in this regard.”
On the state’s preparedness for the new academic session, which has suffered a delay due to the lockdown, Mahto said his department is planning to deliver textbooks to students at their doorsteps. He said, “Once the lockdown is lifted, we are also considering to increase school timings from the existing five hours to seven a day and scrap the half-working day on Saturdays to make up for the academic loss.”
