It was the National School of Drama where he met his wife - the writer Sutapa Sikdar. The actor spent years doing daily soaps and once in an interview revealed that once he didn't get paid because the makers thought his acting was bad. Irrfan began his silver screen journey with Mira Nair's Oscar-nominated 'Salaam Bombay' and was devastated when his character hit the cutting room floor. Irrfan, who often refused to take the parts he found too close to religious and cultural connection, was twice detained at Los Angeles airport because of his name. He then dropped Khan from his name and preferred to be called only as Irrfan.
