Denial of entry of 14 people into Yanam: Puducherry minister Malladi Krishna Rao stages dharna against Kiran Bedi

Puducherry health minister Malladi Krishna Rao stages dharna on Wednesday
PUDUCHERRY: Puducherry health minister Malladi Krishna Rao staged dharna at the legislative assembly on Wednesday demanding the entry of 14 people, including a woman, into Yanam, Puducherry's enclave in Andhra Pradesh.
Rao said these people had gone to other parts of the country on work before the lockdown began. They managed to reach Yanam on foot and other means of transport after the lockdown was imposed. However, they were denied permission to enter the region by the territorial officials following the direction of lieutenant governor Kiran Bedi, he said.
Rao earlier called on the speaker of legislative assembly V P Sivakolunthu and submitted a representation narrating the hardships faced by the 14 people, who were stranded on the Yanam-AP border.

Bedi rubbished Rao’s allegations. She pointed out that chief secretary Ashwani Kumar, who is the chairperson of the state executive committee (SEC) to assist the Puducherry disaster management authority, has been holding meetings daily to review the enforcement of all directions of the Centre during the lockdown period.
“He (chief secretary) is accountable for overseeing the enforcement. I believe this in conformity with GOI (government of India) directions. And not any individual decision. All are bound by the GOI directions. including the minister. There are no exceptions in this period of crisis management and enforcement. Perhaps, it’s becoming difficult for the minister in understanding and appreciating this. Hence attribution to any one individual is wrong. This is the policy and the rules during the lockdown period. And we all without exceptions have to abide by them,” Bedi said.
