CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government requested the public to maintain social distancing and not to indulge in panic buying once the four-day
total lockdown comes to an end in in Chennai, Coimbatore and
Madurai on Wednesday night. Lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19 will continue in these cities till May 3 as in other parts of the state.
Foreseeing a rush in buying essential items after the four-day total lockdown, the government has allowed grocery, vegetable and fruit
shops to remain open between 6am and 5pm on Thursday (April 30).
The shops would remain open between 6am and 1pm on Friday (May 1), said an official release.
The state government on Tuesday issued an order to continue the lockdown in five corporations -- Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem and Tirupur after total lockdown is over. (The three-day total lockdown in Salem and Tirupur came to an end on Tuesday evening.)
“The lockdown will continue till May 3 as per the conditions prevailing prior to April 26,” chief secretary K Shanmugam said.
