BOSTON — The Red Sox have announced a plan to reimburse ticket holders through the first two months of the 2020 season.

Refunds, credits and exchanges will be made available to fans who made their purchases directly from the club. Fenway Park was scheduled to host a combined 28 games in April and May, beginning with the April 2 home opener against the White Sox and ending with a getaway-day matchup against the Royals on May 28.

"It’s important that we provide options to our ticket buyers for games scheduled in April and May," club president and CEO Sam Kennedy said in a statement. "We appreciate how patient our fans have been as we worked through the implications of the pandemic on our schedule. We extend our best wishes for the health and safety of the individuals and families in Red Sox Nation."

Boston is offering three options to its patrons — a full refund, a credit to be used by the close of the 2021 season or an exchange for a future game in 2020. That third alternative seems unlikely in the near future with Massachusetts under a stay-at-home order until at least May 18. Gov. Charlie Baker previously announced a school closure for the remainder of the 2019-20 academic year and is prohibiting any similar mass gatherings.

The Red Sox are acting in accordance with a Major League Baseball decision issued Tuesday. MLB granted autonomy to each of its 30 clubs regarding possible ticket refunds or credit through at least the season’s first two months. That action came exactly a week after two New York fans, Matthew Ajzenman and Susan Terry-Blazer, filed a lawsuit in the Los Angeles branch of U.S. District Court against MLB, commissioner Rob Manfred and each of the 30 clubs.

Boston season-ticket holders will have the option of receiving a full refund or earning a credit toward the purchase of tickets in 2020 and 2021. Should they opt to receive a credit, those season-ticket holders will receive an extra 10% bonus credit applied to future games. Ticket holders who decline to make an exchange for a later date in 2020 will be granted a full refund.

Games affected during the two-month period include Patriots’ Day against the Indians on April 20 and the lone scheduled visit of Mike Trout and the Angels from May 5-7. The Red Sox were also set to play six times against the Rays and would have welcomed the Astros for a three-game set from May 22-24.
