At least till May 3, police station staff will work in 12-hour shifts followed by 24-hour rest period

After losing three head constables to COVID-19 over the last three days, the Mumbai Police on Tuesday announced a slew of safety measures for personnel.

The Hindu had earlier reported how constables aged 55 and above had been sent on compulsory leave, as their age puts them at a higher risk of being infected. Three head constables have succumbed to the novel coronavirus since April 25.

Mumbai Police spokesperson DCP Pranaya Ashok said that personnel over the age of 52 who have a history of medical conditions like diabetes and hypertension are also being asked to stay at home, while other measures are being undertaken across the force.

“At least till May 3, police station staff will work 12-hour shifts followed by a 24-hour rest period. Accommodation is being arranged if any personnel wish to stay back and rest instead of going home,” Mr. Ashok said. Several constables and officers said being able to stay back would help avoid the risk of infection in long commutes, which also puts their families in danger.

“We are also providing them hydroxychloroquine tablets and multivitamin and protein supplements under medical supervision. Special hospitals are being designated for police personnel, and all hospitals treating COVID-19 patients will have dedicated beds for policemen,” Mr. Ashok said.

Other measures include a special helpline for police personnel or their family members to clear any doubts they might have, distribution of personal protective equipment like face masks, hand sanitisers, gloves and shields and provision of amenities like food packets and hot water flasks.

“The government has announced an ex gratia amount to the families of all personnel lost to COVID-19,” Mr. Ashok said.
