Chennai lockdown news: Today's updates from your city

Amid prevalent chaos and uncertainty over access to the essential services and commodities during the lockdown, we bring you the latest updates from your city.
*Update at 11.32am | In Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai corporations, grocery stores and vegetable shops to remain open between 6am and 5pm on April 30. The shops to stay open from 6am to 1pm on May 1: Tamil Nadu government
* Update at 11.05am: Disinfectant being sprayed at Madhavaram bus terminus as flower and fruit market from koyambedu will temporarily be shifted as a precautionary measure for Covid-19.

As the state continues to grapple with an increase in the number of Covid-19 positive cases, chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami on Tuesday expressed anguish over people’s lack of understanding about the severity of the infection.
He was speaking to bureaucrats of 12 coordination committees set up by the government, a day after taking part in a video conference convened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi with chief ministers. “In corporations like Chennai, Coimbatore and Trichy, the problem lies in vegetable markets. No matter how much you tell people, they refuse to follow them (lockdown restrictions). They are playful,” the chief minister said. On Tuesday, of the 121 fresh cases reported, 18 have been identified as “primary” infections and not from “contacts”.

Erode district, which had the third highest Covid-19 cases in the state until the second week of April, has now become a Covid-free district.
The last batch of four Covid-19 patients undergoing treatment at IRT Perundurai government hospital in this turmeric hub got discharged on Tuesday making the district second in the state to achieve 100 % recovery. “We don’t have even a single Covid-19 positive case in the district now,” said Erode collector C Kathiravan.
Nilgiris was the first district to get all Covid positive patients cured in TN when the last of nine people recovered and got discharged on Monday.
* 90 fishermen embark on 1,000km voyage to escape lockdown in Tamil Nadu
In a daring escapade, at least 90 fishermen of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha stranded in Kasimedu and Royapuram blindsided Indian Coast Guard personnel and set sail on a 1,000-km voyage on the high seas to reach their homes on Sunday on 10 boats amid the nationwide lockdown and fishing ban.
Chennai port authorities who manage the harbour and TN fisheries department didn’t have any clue about the journey.
According to sources, Coast Guard patrol vessels and ships may have either missed or failed to intercept the slow-moving boats that may have been at sea for days.
* TN sees highest-ever one-day spike of 121 cases; 103 in city
For the first time, Chennai’s Covid-19 positive count rose by three digits on Tuesday as Tamil Nadu recorded its highest-ever daily count. Chennai accounted for 103 of the 121 new cases in the state. A 68-year-old man from Chennai admitted to a private hospital died taking the death toll to 25.
