In another incident of crackdown on journalists, this time from Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a journalist was arrested by the police for questioning authorities on Twitter!

Journalist Zubair Ahmed was booked by the Andaman police for raising questions over a news article online.

Speaking to India Today TV, Ahmed said that he read a news report in the Andaman Chronicle about a family being home quarantined for 28 days just because they spoke to a relative who was Covid-19 positive over the telephone.

Seeing the story, Ahmed posted tweets on social media seeking an explanation for the incident from the Andaman administration and requested those quarantined not to call anyone over the phones as people were being traced and quarantined over their phone call history.

The journalist was then summoned by the police on April 27 in the evening. He alleged that his phone was seized and he was booked for a non-bailable offence. Ahmed was made to spend 15 hours in the lock-up.

He was produced before a court on Tuesday and got conditional bail in the afternoon.

The authorities state that legal action against Ahmed was necessary so that members of the Union territory don't panic and hide information.
