CHANDIGARH: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday blamed the Congress government for tardy lifting of wheat in the grain markets that was resulting in problems for the farmers and commission agents.
Overall, only 50% of the wheat that arrived in the grain markers has been lifted and at some places lifting has been less than 30%, said AAP.
AAP MLA Kultar Singh Sandhwan said both the state government and the Centre were responsible for the mismanagement. “Had the Centre moved last season’s wheat from the godowns in the state, it would have made things much easier,” he claimed.
Sandhwan said that as on April 27, almost 70% of the wheat in the grain markets of the state was yet to be lifted. “In Tarn Taran it was 70%, 66% in Amritsar and in Nawanshehr 64% of the wheat was yet to be lifted,” he said.
AAP leader Dinesh Chadha said where Punjab government had decided to go for staggered wheat procurement this time due to the Covid crisis, slow lifting of procured wheat was resulting in even lesser passes being issued to the farmers and making them anxious.
A total of 48, 36,785 metric tonnes (MT) of wheat had been procured by April 26, of which 26, 26,554 MT had been lifted. The total arrival across the state was 50, 34,762 MT. Wheat procurement began on April 15 in the state, after a delay of a fortnight due to the Covid-19 crisis, and Sunday was the 12th day of the exercise.
