Mosimane, Sundowns seeking signature of new striker

2020-04-27 14:19

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane would like to add a "number 9" to his squad, to complete their signings for the new season.

The Downs mentor, who is expected to pen a contract extension when lockdown regulations are lifted, has reportedly been hard at work preparing for the upcoming campaign.

Doubts still linger over the future of the current Premier League season, as a result of the coronavirus, but Mosimane says he already has his signings in place - and would like just one, or two more.

Speaking to KickOff, he said: "We are about 80% done [with signings].

"We want to put another striker with Mauricio (Affonso) to make sure that we have someone in case of injuries.

"Look, we have used Vila (Sibusiso Vilakazi), who is intelligent there but I don't know if he's a striker or what, and I've used Lebogang Maboe there because I don't have Affonso and we have released Brockie.

"We've done that last year and we won the league, remember? And we did the same thing this year, but now we said we're not going to do what we did the year before, let's put Affonso in.

"So, we're trying to get another number-9. I believe Sundowns needs a number-9. Yes, you can say why be worried about a number-9 when you won the league last year, and you're still number two this year?"

He continued: "I've always had a nine, I had [Cuthbert] Malajila, [Katlego] Mashego before; I had [Leonardo Castro... Okay, I converted Khama [Billiat] and Percy [Tau] to nines because I had to do what I had to do, but I believe I must have a nine.

"It works, like you see with Bayern – they have [Robert] Lewandowski; Juve have [Gonzalo] Higuain as a nine, you know what I'm saying? So, I also like a nine."
