HOWRAH: Breaking of fast in the month of Ramzan without fruits was a problem Muslims in large pockets of Howrah had to face on Saturday since the police had enforced a lockdown. This was flagged by the community members on Saturday night with leaders calling up the police stations and councillors, getting the commissionerate to swing into action and start an exclusive fruit delivery chain in the affected pockets.
By Sunday afternoon, cycle vans and battery operated vehicles laden with fruits were seen doing the rounds in Pilkhana and Votebagan of north Howrah.
The network is about to start in south and central Howrah too where on Sunday some citizens were seen distributing fruits in grocery bags that they have been distributing among the needy.
The Imam of Pilkhana Jama Masjid, Maulana Abdul Hamid Habibi, said that while in other years large Iftar parties were thrown by philanthropists where fruits and fried items were served to the poor, this year people were breaking their fast at home and the poor were suffering.
“We have a delivery system in place for the next seven days,” said commissioner Kunal Agarwal.
Deputy commissioner Priyobrata Roy said that the system was being streamlined further.
