Australian shoppers have voted for their favourite supermarket sliced breads of 2020 - including white, wholemeal and multigrain.

Consumer review website Canstar Blue put Tip Top, Wonder White, Helga's Continental Bakehouse, Buttercup, Abbott's Village Bakery, Woolworths and Coles to the test to see which loaf came out on top. 

Thousands of shoppers surveyed in the annual review were asked to rate the popular grocery staple based on taste, freshness, texture, range variety, value for money and overall customer satisfaction.

WHITE BREAD

More than 1,000 shoppers voted for their favourite brand white bread on the market.

Buttercup ($3) came out on top for the best white bread after toppling last year's winner Tip Top in the ratings to claim the number one spot.

It scored the only five-star rating for overall satisfaction, and top marks for taste, freshness, texture and value for money. It received four stars when it came to variety.

Australia's iconic brand Tip Top ($3.40) finished runner up after scoring a five-star review for variety, four stars for taste, texture, freshness and overall satisfaction but fell short in value for money with three stars.

Besides the big brands, supermarket-own labels from Woolworths and Coles also dominated the white bread options

Helga's Continental Bakehouse ($3.90 - $6) received a five-star rating for variety and scored four stars for overall satisfaction and taste, and just three stars for texture, freshness and value for money.

Wonder White ($3.40) scored four stars in texture, taste, freshness variety and overall satisfaction, but scored only three stars for value for money.

Besides the big brands, supermarket-own labels from Woolworths ($1.30 - $3) and Coles ($1.30 - $3) also dominated the white bread options.

Both leading supermarkets scored four-star ratings for value for money and variety and three stars for taste, texture, freshness and overall satisfaction.

MULTIGRAIN BREAD

More than 500 shoppers were surveyed where they reviewed and voted for their favourite multigrain bread brands.

Helga's Continental Bakehouse earned the top spot for the first multigrain bread, followed by Woolworths and then Coles

Abbott's Village Bakery earned five stars for taste and texture, while Tip Top rated four stars on taste and value for money

Helga's Continental Bakehouse ($3.90 - $6) earned the top spot in every category but slumped slightly in value for money after scoring just three stars.

Woolworths ($2.30) was rated second best in this year's ratings, scoring five stars on value for money and four stars in freshness, taste, texture, value for money and overall satisfaction. It got three stars for variety.

Coles ($2.30) finished third, achieving five stars on value for money, beating the winner Helga's but scored four stars in freshness, taste and overall satisfaction.

Abbott's Village Bakery ($3.80 - $7) earned five stars for taste and texture and scored four stars in most categories, including freshness and overall satisfaction.

Meanwhile Tip Top ($3.40) rated four stars on taste and value for money, but got only three stars in freshness, texture, variety and overall satisfaction.

WHOLEMEAL BREAD

More than 500 shoppers rated the best brands for wholemeal bread.

Helga's Continental Bakehouse ($3.90) took the lead, scoring the only five-star rating for overall satisfaction and top marks for taste, freshness, variety and texture - but its performance slightly dipped, receiving just three stars in value for money.

Coles ($1.30 - $4.50) took a slice out of the winner's performance, earning the only five-star rating for value for money. It also received four stars for freshness, texture and overall satisfaction, and three stars for taste and variety.

Wonder White ($3.40) earned a five-star rating for texture and received four stars for value for money, freshness, taste and variety.

Woolworths ($3) achieved four stars in the categories of freshness, value for money and overall satisfaction, but scored just three stars on taste, variety and texture.

Abbott's Village Bakery ($3.80 - $7) stood out with a five-star rating for taste and texture, and four stars on freshness, variety and overall satisfaction but got three stars for value for money.

While Tip Top scored five stars in texture, but fell short in freshness, taste, variety, value for money and overall satisfaction with three stars.
