KOTA: A 27-year-old jute artisan, who is the driving force behind many self-help groups in the district, tied the nuptial knot amid the lockdown at the Gayatri Parivar temple in Borekheda of Kota on Sunday.
Sumitra, winner of many accolades at state and national levels, got married to 32-year-old Ketan Khandelwal, a businessman, in a modest fivemember ceremony.
Ajmer-born Sumitra had a tough childhood. Escaping a bid to be sold off by her father at an early age after the death of her mother, she was brought up and schooled by her maternal grandparents. But she lost their backing soon as they both died within short intervals.
With a PG degree in political science and skill to stitch and design jute products that she learnt through internet, she aimlessly moved to Kota where she came in touch with an SHG associated with National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM), which became a platform for her to translate her jute skills into profession for livelihood.
“I took Sumitra as an ordinary artisan when she first came to my office around four years ago, but I was elated with the exquisite finishing of jute products,” said social development officer of NULM at Kota Municipal Corporation, Hemlata Gandhi, who played a vital role in fixing her marriage.
