New limited edition Mazda MX-5 R Sport revealed for 2020

Latest special edition version of Mazda’s popular sports car features a host of cosmetic tweaks, including a fresh set of 16-inch RAYS alloy wheels

This is the Mazda MX-5 R Sport - the latest in a long list of special edition versions of the MX-5. Production is limited to just 150 examples, with each carrying a price-tag of £27,700.

In essence, the MX-5 R Sport is a more generously equipped version of Mazda’s mid-range Sport model. Upgrades include a new set of 16-inch alloy wheels from specialist RAYS, a grey convertible roof, piano black door mirrors and a fresh Polymetal Grey metallic paint finish. Inside, Mazda has also added burgundy leather upholstery with silver stitching.

Aside from these items, the R-Sport’s standard specification matches that of its mid-range stablemate. LED headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, rear parking sensors, cruise control and keyless entry are all fitted from the factory, as well as a nine-speaker Bose stereo system and a seven-inch infotainment system with navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

The MX-5 R-Sport is only available as a soft-top convertible with Mazda’s entry-level Skyactiv-G 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which sends power to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. Power and torque figures stand at 130bhp and 152Nm respectively – enough for a 0–62mph time of 8.3 seconds and a top speed of 127mph. If you want the more potent 2.0-litre model with 181bhp, you won’t be able to get it in R-Sport trim.

Customers can register their interest now, but Mazda says first UK deliveries of the R-Sport can only take place “once the current retail restrictions come to an end.”
