Volkswagen re-starts Europe's largest car factory after coronavirus shutdown

  • Volkswagen the world's largest carmaker by sales, on Monday said it had resumed work at its biggest factory in Wolfsburg, Germany, to give its workers time to adapt to new hygiene measures to combat the coronavirus.
  • Encouraged by a fall in infection rates, Germany eased lockdown rules and carmakers are relying on the country's ability to trace and contain the coronavirus to put Europe's largest economy back to work.
  • In Wolfsburg, around 8,000 workers started building cars again on Monday, including the VW Golf. This week 1,400 cars will be built, followed by 6,000 cars in a fortnight, VW said.

Coronavirus cases in Pakistan rises to 13,328; death toll 281

  • Pakistan's coronavirus cases have climbed to 13,328 while the death toll from the pandemic has reached 281 with 12 more fatalities, the health ministry said on Monday.
  • According to the Ministry of National Health Services, more than 3,000 people have recovered from the contagion.
  • The ministry said that Punjab has reported 5,446 cases, Sindh 4,615, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa 1,864, Balochistan 781, Gilgit-Baltistan 318, Islamabad 245 and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir 59 cases.

Novacyt signs coronavirus test supply contract with UK government

  • Healthcare and clinical diagnostics company Novacyt has signed a supply contract with the UK's Department of Health & Social Care (DHSC) for its product aimed at testing for the presence of the coronavirus, the company said on Monday.
  • Under the terms of the agreement, Novacyt will supply its coronavirus test to the DHSC for an initial term of six months, starting from May 4.
  • Novacyt has initially committed to supply 288,000 tests per week to the DHSC for use in the UK's National Health Service, with the option to expand the agreement.

RBI's Rs 50,000 crore Special Liquidity Facility for Mutual Funds (SLF-MF)

  • This special repo window will be available to all LAF eligible banks against eligible collateral and can be availed only for on-lending to Mutual funds.
  • The eligible banks may place their bids electronically on the CBS platform between 9 AM and 12.00 Noon every day.
  • An LAF Repo issue will be created every day for the amount remaining under the scheme (Amount remaining Rs 50,000 crores-cumulative amount availed up to the previous day).
  • The bidding process, settlement and reversal of SLF-MF repo would be similar to the existing system being followed in case of LAF/MSF.
  • In case of over-subscription of the notified amount on any given day, the allotment will be done on pro-rata basis. RBI will, however, reserve the right to inject marginally higher amount than the notified amount due to rounding effects.
  • The minimum bid amount would be Rupees one crore and multiples thereof. The allotment would be in multiples of Rupees one crore.
  • A market participant can place bids of amount less than or equal to the notified amount of the issue announced on a given day.
  • RBI will reject bids of the participant if the total bid amount submitted by the participant exceeds the notified amount of the issue.
  • The amount utilized as on previous date will be informed to market participants in the Money Market Operations (MMO) press release.
  • The eligible collateral and the applicable haircuts will remain the same as applicable for LAF.
  • All other terms and conditions as applicable to LAF operations, including facility for security substitution in terms of extant guidelines dated April 12, 2017 will also be applicable to these special operations, mutatis mutandis.
  • While banks will decide the tenor of lending to /repo with mutual funds, the minimum tenor of repo with RBI will be for a period of three months.

MP manufacturing 12,000 PPE kits every day: Official

  • Madhya Pradesh is manufacturing 12,000 personal protective equipment (PPE) kits per day for frontline warriors battling COVID-19, as against its daily requirement of 10,000 kits, a government official has said.
