Trainers play two-up with double bids at Diggers Cup

Good things might come in pairs at Monday's Diggers Cup meeting at Narromine. Local organisers have never seen so many country stables represented, with capacity fields virtually right through the nine-race card to commemorate Anzac Day.

Front of the charge is leading Bathurst trainer Dean Mirfin, who saddles up a classy two-pronged bid. At just his second start in the Maiden Hcp (1300m), promising three-year-old Supergaze can break through off a solid debut at Orange where he was heavily specked at a big price. Mirfin will then put his faith in five-year-old mare Jetgirl in the feature Diggers Cup (1300m) after she had little luck chasing home a smart galloper in the feature Cup Day Sprint at Orange.

Yet there are rivals galore in the Cup, headed by lightly raced Dubbo four-year-old Sneak Preview, coming back from a bold closing effort in the Country Championship final at Randwick but forced to overcome the outside gate. Also with strong claims are Nyngan iron horse A Magic Zariz, Tamworth six-year-old Whosyourhousemate, and consistent Mudgee gelding Distinctive Look.

Trainers Rodney Robb from Nyngan, Tamworth's Cody Morgan, and Scone's Rod Northam all have good double shots - but one trainer may have them all covered.

Eyeing off a double - if not a treble - is Dubbo's Clint Lundholm. Improving four-year-old mare Poetic Harmony looks ready to break through in the opening Maiden Plate (1100m), before Sticks 'N' Stones looks a serious chance in another Maiden Plate, and four-year-old Gorn Hoff can claim a long-awaited second win third-up in a modest BM 50 Hcp over 1300m.

Yet one of the better bets on the program looms in the last, with lightly raced five-year-old mare Northern Lights looking beautifully placed fourth-up for the Brett Thompson stable at Gulgong.
