JORHAT: An Assam Police sub-inspector has been suspended for uploading videos on social media showing police action against people breaking lockdown rules. The incident took place in northern Assam’s Sonitpur district on Friday.
A sub-inspector of Misamari police station in the district uploaded some videos of police action on a group of people who had come out on to the streets flouting lockdown norms. The videos became viral on social media, after which the superintendent of police passed an order of suspension against the SI on Friday with immediate effect.
Mahanta said, “I have suspended SI Bhupendra Rawat of Misamari police station from duty for uploading videos of police action against lockdown violators on his Facebook page. I have also ordered to initiate departmental proceedings against Rawat for his wrongdoings.” He added, “The suspended SI had uploaded at least three such videos on his Facebook page on Wednesday. They later went viral.” In the videos, the police can be seen physically assaulting a group of people on the highway for violating lockdown. The videos have invoked many comments and reactions on social media, with some strongly criticising the police action.
