Now debating: Should India nationalise all hospitals till Covid is brought under control?

A debate is raging on whether the Centre, States and Union Territories should nationalise all healthcare facilities till the coronavirus menace is meaningfully shackled. Given the systematic neglect that has turned India's public hospitals into nothing better than hellholes, does this proposal hold any water? You decide.

India should not nationalize its hospitals. India should instead restart its economy and focus on creating better testing and tracing. COVID can come under control only through vaccine. Focus must be provided to get a vaccine out as soon as possible. Our government must pass a strict law (punishable by law for owners of hospitals) to ban any hospital running as centers of profit and ensure that irrespective of status, standard universal care is provided to all citizens. All life saving medicines must be made free for Indians in public and private medical stores. COVID vaccine once identified must be first produced for Indians, ensuring (like polio) that this is given as preventive medicine for every Indian. We should then export to all countries and charge China the most amount of money if they want to buy one.

Medical system in India needs a big overhaul. Coming under essential services or a public service, I think a strict PPP structure should prevail for all the hospitals i india. Prices should be totally governed by the government like how it works in Power or Airport sector, let the infra be provided by the private players but charges should be regulated. In power sector all the prices and everything is finally approved by the Govt. they should heave a price regulator in place like we have AERA in case of airports, it make sure that the service quality is not hampered and also the prices are in control so that private player do not focus on windfall gains. Anyways healthcare is a public good and the revenues will never be volatile for a private player providing good healthcare service, demand will always be there. We need a strict REGULATOR for all the healthcare services. No doctor can practice its own shop without getting regulatory approval for prices and quality.

Have government services been efficient in our country? Bloated salaries and no work ethics is the norm. Corruption, nepotism, red tape can best describe govt departments. Nationalisation is certainly not the answer.

Nationalisation is no panacea for any malfunction in the system. We have come far away from the mindset of nationalization as a a strategy or way out of a difficult situation. Setting things right in a professional and legal way is the right answer for all our ills. Fix responsibility, instil nationalism and a send of duty to society and take appropriate legal and corrective action on erring individuals/organizations/establishments is one way or correcting errant behavior.

Complete nationalization may not be a good solution. It is advisable to convert all the hospitals into Public Private Participation (PPP) permanently to have a better control by the government as well as providing quality health care.

There are good days, and there are not so good days. Its not a great time to be selling Fashion products or mobile phones. Tv sets and Refrigerators...forget it.

Yes, Private Hospitals are to be nationalised permanently. There is a misnomer on anything that is government owned,be it banks, insurance, railways etc., etc. But during crisis time only the govt., sector comes to the rescue of people. This is what happened during sub prime crisis also.Balachandran Govindarajan.

Rohan Rajah (HYDERABAD)

This is an ingenuine debate. Treatment at affordable costs should be more valuable discussion.

Vivek Kumar (Bombay Vile Parle, Mahar)

Its a super Idiotic idea. We are not idiots to do this.

Yes..Government should decide to think take control of All private hospitals till covid is over..its sad that that these hospitals take the benefit of all government schemes to set up & finally turn blind eye during crisis. Its sad not a single Private hospital has come forward to help this country.

Sakura (Bengaluru)

Yes...but strictly until COVID 19 is brought under control which will take 2years across the world..if private hospitals are not joining hands with Government to provide medical services call national emergency and bring all private hospitals under the Government.

social distancing in india joke.. which planet are these people living on?

Certainly not in your planet. SD is followed by people wherever possible. Indian figures prove that India figured out fared well. So, ....

Why not improve the current state of Govt. hospitals and create a benchmark which the private hospitals have to follow or else get absorbed into the Govt fold.

Be it business or politics or ecience or technology, there lies a groupism of top echelons of committee joining to form a powerful coterie to alter major decisions by corrupts secret clandestine meetings crossing party political affiliations to protect the self interest of the Coterie. Hence it is very difficult to nationalise black money coteries transcending muti parties ruling and opposition. It is easy only to nationalise genuine businesses but with hefty profits for the risks they took to pioneer the field. All Jingoism of politicians works only to kill enterprises but neither crates of bulk black money or clandestine coteries, like Nationalisation killed banks

Almost all private hospitals at present are not opened,it is very difficult to get treatments for other than covid health problems, the government first advise the private hospitals to compulsory open the private hospitals and to give good treatment to non covid patients other wise nationalise those non adhereing hospitals

Kams (Delhi)

Nationalize wealth earned thru corruption. Why after hospitals. Totally balck money is in hands of corrupt and is in real estate and gold

What they did to airindia is what they will do to hospitals, govt should not be in any business, just let private people talent run it you only govern. These Babu's just want to be masters without any liability so that atleast they have the best of everything for free at the expense of the country.

Today's condition has given us the previlage to discuss the grim condition of our healthcare system and to ask ourselves a legitimate question "should we need to nationalise our hospitals". It is reported that public healthcare system across the world is performing far better than private healthcare system in today's condition of Pandemic. Now considering the India's condition, if we nationalise our healthcare system, it has both positives and negatives, for positive side,it can help us provide better coverage of healthcare facilities and to make it cheap and regaulated our healthcare system as per the needs of the government at any point of time, for the negative side, it will erase competition from a very important sector and can lead up to miniscule amount being spend in research and development process. So to conclude,I think India can nationalise hospitals for its benefits but at current point of time given resources in hands of government and Innovation we do in this sector, we cannot do the mistake to nationalise our hospitals, until we propose seperate funds for R&D process in healthcare and, better and timely facilities to the sector, until then the model in which we are running i.e. PPP model can prove to be good where we can do away with all the loopholes in phased manners and intervention by the GOI through expert advice.

Nothing should be done to disincentivize private investment and entrepreneurship. Frankly this is not the time to discuss topics like privatization or its corollary. Rather, all existing infrastructure should be used fullest to fight the pandemic. For the future, Government can think of opening hospitals but one can easily guess how well and efficiently they will be run. It is foolish to make a decision in India based on how Government hospitals are run in the west. I will be happy if Government can run its core governance job than getting into sectors they have no expertise. Don't repeat the Nehru and Indira blunders of the past.

A big no to nationalise all the hospitals. Because every urban area includes all the villages, has one hospital to diagnosis the pandemic and after that, they are referred to a city hospital. Some hospitals are run by some trustees and NGO so, no need to extra burden on govt at the time of crisis and all hospitals have their own patients excluding covid-19 .

Yes the govt should nationalize the health system. The central govt. is spending more by ways of ayushman bharat yojana, free govt. hospitals, medical facilities to central and state govt. staff & pensioners through reimbursement od private medical expenses or through CGHS and deptt. hospitals. There should be subsidised treatment to all patients in APL and free to BPL. Moreover the blackmarketing of medical treatment by private hospitals will stop. In this COVID 19 pandemic most of the so called specialist / suoer specialist doctors of 5 star hospitals are sitting idle and have NIL contribution to the society and are cursing the govy.forthe lockdown and loss of lacs of rupees in OPD and operation charges. Please do something.

Anil Ep (Ep)

Yes. Health Sector shall be under govt Care. Rethink to connect the health system with insurance

Thomas Pooppally (Mumbai, Maharashtra, Ind)

look at the plight of the 16 scheduled banks nationalised in India. the same will happen to the hospitals if nationalised temporarily or otherwise.

Select a few private hospitals in each town that have certain standards and require them to provide exclusive space (beds, floors, staff etc), if not the entire hospital for COVID patient treatment. Fix charges reasonably to provide an incentive for these hospitals to willingly offer these facilities.

It is not advisable. The health care industry able give services which attracted foreigners and we earn $Let us not spoil the name earned by the industry by Nationalising is my view.

No. private hospitals may be permitted to treat COVID Patients, so that the pressure on government hospitals will be reduced.

Jay (India)

The world is possibly facing one of the the worst menace and crisis which is the rise of Dictators and Dictatorships in the name of Democracy. We have more wolves in sheep's clothing than ever.If you were to add the Nationalization of all private hospitals to this Messy cocktail, it would surely be a One Way Ticket To Hell.Nobody ever cares about democracy or for that matter people's interests. It's all about Hidden Agendas, Selfish Self-interest and the game of Throne.Awake from your deep slumber and see for yourself the greatest man made pandemic unfolding not only in the world but even in our own country.

Anoop (Virar, Maharashtra)

Nationalisation will not solve the problems. Every one know the worst conditions of the state run hospitals, unhygiene and non accountability.Instead, a considerable percentage of facilities available in private hospitas should be reserved for treatment of covid 19 patients and local District Head should be made accountable to ensure the facilities are provided.Further, should identify local Ill equipped health centers, medical staff and doctors should be transferred to make use of their experiences in the private hospital identified for treating covid 19 patients.Nationalisation will kill the purpose.

Why debate ?National ise all hospitals linked to Mediclaim TSPs.Some good things will happen to Blackmarkete in medical industry.

Raunak

The Indian medical system will never work in any case, public or private, if all the hospitals were to be nationalised then the doctors would not be much interested in treating patients since they are getting paid anyways, they will more likely give much more importance to their private practices, again when the hospitals are nationalised the employees there would start behaving like in any other public hospital, nonchalant, rude lazy and corrupt. On the other side of the spectrum if we look at the private hospitals we will see that the doctors are too eager to draw money out of the patients rather than providing them with the proper treatment sometimes even causing a lot of complications in the process, the lure of free family tours and other promises by the medical representatives lead them to often prescribe very expensive medicines and products to the patients. No policy will help unless these doctors and nurses take the initiative themselves to provide proper treatment and care to the sick but then again this is India and not Germany or UK, so things will go on the way they have been for a hundred years more.

Yash Vora (india) replies to Raunak

thought u hav a problem with medical staff but u hav the problem with the identity as INDIAN - thats hatred & uncurable , god bless u wrt government hospitals - u need to hav some knowledge & common sense - without which u will be exploited in any sector or place working in understaffed hospitals against the quantity that we have as patients is quite difficult - if u cant still get it , try to volunteer in any hospital setup or even in chc / phc

Nik (India)

Yes otherwise these hospital will become new covid19 hotspots

ajs (Indore)

Yes. All States and UTs must nationalist the hospitals and clinics all over India and bring them under the pay roll and management of Government. By charging reasonable fees instead of giving free treatment, government can get income. Since there is no regulator for medical practices like the SEBI or RBI or IRDA, this serves both social and economic justice to Indian Public. All hospitals and clinics including trust and temple run institutions including the medical shops under them must be nationalised.

Yes. Absolutely, health care should be universal. We salaried pay high taxes after slogging for 12 to 14 hours a day five or six days a week. Medical health cover should be available to all Indians. There is no relief ☹️ to senior citizens too. The only benefit the senior citizens in India have is to travel for free in BEST busses. The government needs to step up and work for the people

No. How long it will take to get rid of Corona, no one knows. Rates should be fixed and follow up should be there. Looting should be avoided by effective supervision and control.

FULLY AGRRED. SIMILARLY FILM, LIQUOR INDUSTRIES SHOULD BE NATIONALIZED, ALL CINEMA THEATERS/MULTIPLEXES SHOULD ALSO BE NATIONALISED.

Mohammed Osman (Secunderabad)

Hospitals, nursing homes and elderly homes should be under private control. The Government should formulate medical, hygienic, social and financial codes and standards to be administered by a semi quasi committee consisting of professionals in the aforementioned disciplines. These should be under observation for compliance by professional societies.osman

Absolutely NOT! That's just dragging everything down to the lowest common denominator

Not a bad idea. But don't rush in without proper planning.

G.Balasubramanian. (Tiruchirapalli.)

Private hospitals should be nationalised forever. They only squeeze money from the poor but the treatment is not effective. The rude manner in which the doctors and nurses talk and behave is worth condemning. We condsider the doctors to be next only to God's but they have behave like like dogs..

No nationalisation of anything let alone hospitals. That would be inciting corruption and inefficiency in

col sps malhotra (NEW DELHI)

Nationalisation of Hospitals would be excellent step. These should be based on the population of the area.As a yardstick all hospitals should have a template and the starting should be from 4000sq mtr plot and should be adequate to cater for 5lakh population. These should be spread all across the Country. The advantages would be phenomenal. No more Doctors fleecing the populace from firstly CHARGING HIGH CONSULTATION FEES, SECONDLY WRITING ALL POSSIBLE TESTS AND PUTTING THE PATIENT IN CHAOS AND TROUBLE.THIRDLY, THE MEDICAL REPRESENTATIVES GREASING THE PALMS WOULD FINISH AND THE FREQUENT HOLIDAY TRIPS TO DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN LANDS WOULD FINISH. FOURTLY , NO MORE UNWANTED SURGERIES WOULD BE THERE. FIFTHLY, THE DOCTORS WILL TRULY PRACTICE THEIR JOB.I sincerely wish this step is taken. The population should be 100 Percent Insured and all the treaatment should be from the prescribed hospitals which are in near vicinity. There would be no need for the Ambulances ferrying patients from one hospital to other and getting more money in return.

Yes, it will increase no. Of new a avilable and private hospital are well equipped with medical facilities and equipment.

Up to July 2020,yes but beyond that will be suicidal.

No instead they should be incentivised

IF WE WANT TO REDUCE THE POPULATION, NATIONALISATION OF HOSPITALS IS A GOOD IDEA.BUT WE DONT WANT TO BE SO. NO NATIONALISATION.

Yes. Indeed it's a good idea. There should be a uniformity in the healthcare system. Private hospitals should also be as bad, rude, crowded, filthy as government hospitals. They should also admit cases when carry any sifarishi letter of a politician or a phone call of a bureaucrat. Private hospitals should also implement reservation & quota system. Why should such privileges be restricted to government hospitals

Vijay Kumar (Hyderabad)

Healthcare, education should be state subject provided they are run without useless bureaucracy and political interference. By the way why not allow every tax payer to get treatment in ESI hospitals too

Subhendu Mazumdar (Kolkata)

Yes. Healthcare sould be natonalise...
