Ludhiana: With the airport coming up at Halwara, Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (Glada) officials have proposed two roads to connect the proposed airport with the main roads. Glada is acquiring land at Aitiana village for the construction of the airport, which will use the runaway of Halwara Air Force station.
A senior officer of Glada said a few months ago they had sent two proposals for the construction/upgrading of roads to the upcoming
Halwara airport. He added that whereas one of the road measuring around 5-6km hds been proposed from Mullanpur side, the other road measuring around 12km had been proposed from Ferozepur road in Ludhiana.
“If one of the road proposal gets through, a total of 300ft wide land will be needed for the project of which 1,00ft is expected to be for the road whereas the rest will be earmarked for commercial centres, etc. If the proposal for linking the Ludhiana-Ferozepur national highway with Halwara is accepted, then the acquisition authorities will have to acquire land in about six to seven villages,” said a source.
He added, “However, these proposals are in the initial stages and much will be known about whether they will be accepted or rejected after a meeting of Glada officials with the higher authorities of the department concerned in Chandigarh, which couldn’t happen due to curfew.”
He added that the major problem with such proposals as of now is lack of funds with the state government, which had to spend money on making efforts to contain Covid-19. Glada officials said a proposal was floated for such a road before the acquisition process for Halwara airport was started, but that was rejected by the state government due to some reasons.
Meanwhile, many villagers confirmed that such a proposal was there. “I have seen the proposal document, wherein the road is to be constructed from Mullanpur to Aitiana, for which they need to acquire 258 acres from seven to eight villages. Of our village, 58 acres is to be acquired, whereas they have to acquire 4.5 acres of Tugal village, 14.5 acres of Sudhar, about 58.5 acres of Boparai and about 36 acres of Dhat, etc.,” said Lakhvir Singh, sarpanch of Aitina village. He added that they had also attended a meeting held in this regard.
