Social media a boon in times of social distancing

The authorities are doing their best to contain the Covid-19 with newer strategies while asking us to stay at homes. In this critical time, corona warriors — the hospitals, police, bankers, media, NGOs and many others working relentlessly — deserve our salutations. Social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter have come as a boon to stay connected and spread awareness.
With social distancing norms in force, even the officials and ministers have been using these mediums for the quick and effective communication to remain united in this Covid-19 war so that there is minimum difficulty to masses. NGOs distributing rations in the city have used the social media to ensure that no one sleeps hungry. Police are using Facebook to communicate and keep the people motivated.
While the real Covid-19 warriors are in field, the challenges of this lockdown period have provided an opportunity to connect to our friends.
It’s good to see residents from different strata coming together on a common forum and doing their bit for the welfare of people making best use of social media. There are quite a few WhatsApp groups of like-minded people in the city, who are doing their bit by helping poor who are facing hardship due to prolonged lockdown. These groups comprise top industrialists, city entrepreneurs, medical doctors and scientists, professors and politicians, senior bureaucrats and retired bankers.
Amid criticism over the misuse of social media, there are also several instances where the information being shared on these forums has turned out to be a life saviour. Be it about the information about shortage of food in a particular locality or the need for a particular blood group to a patient in emergency, the social media and WhatsApp groups on which such information is being shared are turning out to be a boon.
In the times of soical distancing, when all of us are grappling with a never seen before situation, the strengthening of bond over social media and making best use of it for furthering the cause of poor and needy is the need of the hour.
