The trend of tablet-sized touchscreens, which started with the Tesla Model S, has now become the norm for carmakers everywhere like is the case with the MG Hector in India. However, Nissan has revealed its plans to stay away from the trend and instead, work on a touchscreen design that is convenient for the driver.
Rather than a tablet-like touchscreen, Nissan is working on a horizontal design that joins the instrument cluster. This design debuted in the Ariya Concept SUV last year, where the EV crossover features a curved, two-screen display reminiscent of a wave. It keeps driving information in an instrument cluster location with entertainment information, comfort controls, and system status displayed on the centre screen.
Tomomichi Uekuri, senior manager of HMI engineering team, revealed that they are adopting this design as it conveys information better for the human eye, from a safer location in the line of sight.
Expect Nissan’s upcoming Magnite sub-4m SUV for India to feature a similar touchscreen. It is likely to launch later this year with prices starting from the Rs 9-lakh mark. It will take on the Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, Ford EcoSport, and the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza.
