Two people have died in a truck and vehicle crash on the Bruce Highway in central Queensland.

Emergency services were called to the head-on crash just before 6am on the O'Connell River Bridge on Friday at Bloomsbury in Mackay.

The female driver of the car and her male passenger were declared dead at the scene, a police spokeswoman said.

The 43-year-old male truck driver was taken to Proserpine Hospital in a stable condition as a precaution.

The Bruce Highway will remain closed in both directions while Forensic Crash Unit investigators continue to assess the scene.
