CHENNAI: At least 600 tonnes of vegetables and fruits from the Koyambedu wholesale market have been delivered to customers at their doorsteps in the fortnight since the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority launched the initiative. All the commodities were supplied at fixed prices decided in Koyambedu.
Of this, about 100 tonnes were distributed through food delivery apps like Zomato, Swiggy and Dunzo, said sources with the Market Management Committee (MMC) which maintains the market under the aegis of the CMDA. “Fruits were delivered only through food delivery apps,” a MMC official said. A combo packet of fruits and veggies, sold for between ₹200 and ₹250 each, could last a family four to five days.
The rest of deliveries were executed across the Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA) in mini-vans. According to official sources, these supplies were facilitated by orders booked over phone after dedicated mobile numbers were made available. Every day, 120 to 150 calls are received seeking vegetable supply, the sources said.
"Anywhere between 25 tonnes and 30 tonnes are being delivered on a daily basis through 20 to 40 vehicles. Each vehicle supplies veggies to multiple localities in theb CMA,” the official added. Every bulk order is being supplied for a minimum of 25 families. Around 50 minitrucks were flagged off on April 8 to deliver vegetables.
The MMC has a dedicated team that engages in taking orders through phone calls from the public. Later, the vegetables and fruits are sent through the mini-vehicles. However, the MMC is unlikely to continue the facility after the lockdown period ends on May 3.
“It can be done by stateowned cooperative societies but not by the MMC because we are doing it as a service only during the lockdown,” the MMC official said.
