BENGALURU: In a move to cut its losses, the state government has decided to allow KSRTC, BMTC and other state-run transport corporations to run buses on contract, to ferry employees of companies that are allowed to operate under the new lockdown guidelines. Buses will also be used to transport goods to keep supply chains open.
All four state-run road transport corporations in the state suspended services when the nationwide lockdown was enforced on March 23, resulting in a cumulative loss of over Rs 860 crore.
To offset the losses, the government, at a high-level meeting chaired by chief minister BS Yediyurappa to discuss ways to revive economic activity once the lockdown is lifted, decided to allow corporations to rent their buses to IT, BT and ITES companies in Bengaluru and Tier -II cities. Buses will also be allowed to transport farm produce.
“Since the government has made it mandatory for all companies to provide transportation for employees, the government is seeking to seize the opportunity to secure some revenue through transport entities,” said a transport department official.
Members at the meeting also decided to focus on attracting domestic tourists to the state, given an expected decline in international tourists for next one year. The CM also instructed officials to explore ways to export farm produce, especially vegetables and fruits.
