KOLKATA: Leave your worries to us while you stay at ho-me and be safe, said chief minister Mamata Banerjee while making the rounds of Moulali on Thursday. It was the third day in a row that she was out on the streets, visiting areas close to containment zones in her SUV and ur-ging people over a public address system to stay indoors. Banerjee was accompanied by Kolkata mayor Firhad Hakim and police commissioner Anuj Sharma.
“Some people are scared to look beyond video screens. But I have always believed that my work is with the people on the streets. So, I am with you on the streets. I may even fall ill while doing this but I would know it happened
because I was working for people. We will all overcome this. I am adopting all safety measures, so should you. We also have to think about our family and loved ones,” the chief minister said. “In Bengal, we have analysed that this (novel coronavirus) tend to spread among families, too. Twelve members we-re infected in one family, six in another. A moment of carelessness can prove dangerous for the people around us. So, we all need to be careful. If we need to step out, we must take all precautions. We need to wear masks and stand away from people. I say this because humans are the carriers of this virus.”
Her next stop was in Behala. “Whenever I visited here earlier, I met you, spoken to you and held meetings. But today, I cannot step out of my car. This lockdown is unpre-cedented. I have never seen anything like this before. The Centre has imposed this.
If you are abiding by the lock-down norms, it is also my responsibility to do so.” Pointing out the enormity of the Covid-19 pandemic and the state’s effort to tackle it, Banerjee said, “This is not just about us, the entire world is in the grip of the disease. In India, Maharashtra, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Delhi have been affected. We, too, have been affected, though the number is fewer here. But we need not worry about it. Today, we could cure and send 24 people home. In Bengal, we have been able to treat and cure more than a 100 people. All we need to do is be careful.”
Promising all possible help, the chief minister said, “If you feel ill, please call us, we will take care of you. There are hospital isolation centres where the government will treat you for free. There are also quarantine centres. All you need to do is be safe at home. For any difficulty, please call the local police.” Pointing out the significance of the lockdown, Banerjee said, “I understand your pain. I understand it is a struggle to remain at home without work, but we have kept all essential services open for you.
We need to careful to drive out this disease.”
