Dowry death: Woman kills self, husband arrested

Ludhiana: Daba police arrested a 26-year-old man for dowry death after his wife committed suicide in Gobindsar Mohalla on Monday night.
The victim — Parminder Kaur, 24 — who was married to Gurdit Singh for the past one-and-a half years. Gurdit worked as a private surveyor in Punjab State Power Corporation Limited. The couple had a three-month old daughter.
Yamunanagar-based Sunita, mother of Parminder, alleged she had received a call from Parminder on Monday afternoon, telling her how the in-laws were harassing her for dowry.
“She wanted to come back, but I asked her to wait till the lockdown. Later at 9pm when I called her, her mother-in-law Inderjit answered the call and said Parminder is sleeping,” she said.
At around 11pm, Parminder’s sister-in-law called her and informed about her death, police said.
Next day, Parminder’s family reached Ludhiana and lodged a complaint with police.
Inspector Pavittar Singh, SHO, Daba police station, said the family has alleged that the husband and in-laws of Parminder used to harass her for dowry due to which she has committed suicide. The police have lodged an FIR under Sections 304-B (dowry death) and 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of IPC against husband Gurdit, mother-in-law Inderjit Kaur, father-in-law Harjider Singh and sister-in-law Nanu. The police have arrested Gurdit in this case while others are absconding.
