Hathaway got all method actor about it
Anne Hathaway is a rare selfie taker, but when she does flash her megawatt smile at her 17 million followers, she does so with intent. When it came to the #PillowChallenge—a lockdown social-media phenomenon that has delighted celebrities—Hathaway got all method actor about it.
Strapping not one pillow, but three to her torso, Hathaway channelled her Princess Diaries character, Mia Thermopolis, for her take on the viral styling competition. She recreated the poster of the 2001 Disney film—complete with sunglasses, headphones and a butterfly background—and borrowed a line from her co-star, Julie Andrews, for the caption. “A Queen is never late; everyone else is simply early,” she said in reference to her own lateness to the virtual challenge. Over two million people hit the heart button and metaphorically curtseyed to Hathaway’s royal submission.
The isolation distraction method (see also the handstand challenge in the Celebrities Doing Things To Occupy Themselves series) might be a fleeting phenomenon, but Hathaway’s late entry proves a valid point that strapping a cushion to your torso is not about looking sexy. Yes Berry managed to look phenomenal while surrounded by luscious greenery in her state of undress, but the #PillowChallenge is a form of entertainment. Hathaway’s queenly effort will be the one we remember when lockdown relaxes.
