GURUGRAM: The ongoing lockdown, while keeping city residents indoors, has also resulted in a drastic dip in crimes in
Gurugram. The number of heinous crimes, including rape, murder, theft and robbery, has come down by more than 80% between March 25 and April 15 this year as compared to the corresponding period in 2019.
A total of 625 cases have been registered in Gurugram during this period, while 1,503 cases were filed last year in the same period. Out of the 625 cases, 365 are related to lockdown violations. FIRs registered for other crimes amount to just 260 —a dip of almost 83% compared to 2019.
Attributing the fall to restricted movement of people and installation of checkposts across the city, Gurugram commissioner of police (CP) Mohammad Akil said the crime data gives residents a reason to cheer about during the lockdown. “Crowded streets and movement of people create opportunities for criminals. Now, people are at home and police are on the streets, which has naturally brought down crimes. Restriction in movement of vehicles is the biggest obstacle for criminals,” Akil said.
Crimes against women like rape, molestation and sexual harassment have come down significantly. Theft and burglary are the most common crimes on normal days, but with most people restricted to their homes due to the lockdown, cases of theft are down to 26 from 365 last year. Burglary cases have fallen to just three from 40.
Moreover, only 16 cases of vehicle theft have been registered against 275 last year. “Most of the vehicles are stolen from market areas and sectors. Markets are closed now and police checkposts are in place across the city,” a police officer said. Drastic reduction in the number of vehicles on roads has also reduced fatalities in road accidents to 5 from 16 last year.
The city, however, has seen a rise in cases of fraud and cheating during the lockdown — as many as 59 such cases have registered between March 25 and April 15 this year compared to 11 last year in the same period. Online fraudsters are coming up with innovative ways to cheat people; while some have been duped in the name of making donations to the PM CARES fund, others fell prey to promises of home delivery of liquor.
Crime against children have also increased marginally — four cases have been registered under the Pocso Act against three last year.
No case has been registered under the Arms Act.
