WRD assures to clear debris dumped into nullahs at Gaunsawaddo

Mapusa: A joint inspection of illegal land filing was inspected on Tuesday by Mapusa municipal council along with water resource department to check measures to be taken in bid to ensure that all outlets connecting to Mapusa river are obstruction free to avoid any flooding in Gaunsawaddo, Mapusa.

It may be recalled that Mapusa municipal council on April 8 had approached North Goa collector to issue direction under Section 33 of National disaster Management act 2005 for dredging of Mapusa Tar river and also for clearing off debris dumped at Gaunswaddo along the river bank before onset of monsoon as remedial measure.

Following which direction were issued to water resources department executive engineer to carry out necessary desilting activities along the Mapusa river bank and also clear debris dumped along the river bank before the onset of forthcoming monsoon in order to avoid untoward incident. Accordingly on Tuesday a joint inspection was held by chief officer of Mapusa municipal council, Clen Madeira along with assistant engineer of water resources department, Ganpat Raikar. Even municipal engineer, Venkatesh Sawant, junior engineer, Nadeem Sheikh and junior engineer WRD, Mallikarjun Niralji were also present.

Interacting with media persons, the chief officer, Clen Maderia informed that instruction are given that whatever debris dumped into nallahs should be cleared and WRD has assured that they will do it.

“WRD have assured to clear nallahs and give. MMC had brought this issue to notice of competent authority and same has to be clear by competent authority or individual owner,” added Maderia.

He further said, “We are concern over Mapusa River as we don’t want any blockage in nallahs which could result in flooding in entire Gaunswaddo.”

The assistant engineer WRD, Ganpat Raikar said that we have assured that whatever debris dumped in nallahs will be cleared. We are taking up work of major nallahs from Khorlim towards Bodgeshwar temple and others will be also taken up before onset of monsoon.

“This land filling work does not come under purview of WRD still we will take up work to clear blockage in nallahs. Last year flooding was witness in Goa but Mapusa was not flooded despite of heavy rains and MMC has appreciated efforts of our efforts and this year too we will take up and finish work before onset of monsoon,” added Raikar.
