Ludhiana: Acting tough against violators of curfew imposed by the government to check the spread of Covid-19, the Jagraon police on Wednesday sent around 48 such persons to open jail. The cops released them in the evening after counselling them.
Police officials said even as the wholesale and retail karyana union had announced that it would keep shops closed for three days, still many such stores were found open. They added that on Wednesday morning, a police team carried out checking at Sabzi Mandi, Railway Road, Nehru Market, Lajpatrai road and other areas and found that many shops were open.
The cops added that the police team detained about 48 persons, including the shop owners, and took them to a school that was being used as an open jail. They added that those detained were released in the evening after counselling by doctors.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Ludhiana rural Vivek Sheel Sony said the checking was done between 6am and 9am on Wednesday and the violators were detained and sent to the open jail. He added that in the open jail social distancing protocol was maintained.
Police officials said at around 5pm, all detainees were released after the doctors counselled them about the spread of disease and how staying at home was important to contain the same. They added that in most cases, the violators didn’t have any reason for defying the curfew whereas in some cases some cited medical reasons, but couldn’t produce proof for the same.
