The UK death toll has risen to more than 18,000.

The Department of Health said 18,100 patients had died in hospital after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK, as of 5pm on Tuesday, up by 763 from 17,337 the day before.

A further 15 people have died after testing positive for coronavirus in Wales, bringing the total number to 624.

Public Health Wales today recorded 274 new known cases, meaning 8,124 people have tested positive for the disease in Wales, although the actual number is likely to be much higher.

It comes as the UK Government is still less than a fifth of the way towards its target of carrying out 100,000 tests per day, according to the latest figures.

The Prime Minister's official spokesman told a Westminster briefing on Wednesday that 18,206 tests were carried out in the 24 hours up to 9am on Tuesday in England, Wales and Scotland.

It is something that has, at some point, touched all our lives.

From cradle to grave, the National Health Service, and the incredible professionals within it who care for us, is a part of British life.

Today, more than ever, we should cherish those who dedicate themselves to our care, heedless of their own health as they work tirelessly to care for people in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.

Nurses and others - employed by the NHS and any other part of health and care - we have never needed them more.

So let’s show them some love, and create a living map of gratitude from every corner of Britain.
