HYDERABAD: Telangana municipal, industries and IT minister K T Rama Rao says the state government is not for indiscriminate testing of people for novel coronavirus and that his government has been conducting tests of all primary and secondary contacts of people tested positive in containment zones. And still the state is testing about 650 people per million population which is more than the national average.
“About 65% to 70% positive cases are asymptomatic and the treatment is isolation. It is impossible for even the Centre to test all 130 crore people in the country. Those who actually need medical attention and have symptoms are being taken care of by the government. Our mantra to contain the virus spread is containment zones and isolation,” KTR told TOI on Wednesday.
The minister added that the government did not allow private laboratories to conduct tests for Covid 19 mainly to ensure that the people are not fleeced. There was also a fear that testing by private labs may lead to panic in people.
He said the pandemic exposed the inadequacy of the medical infrastructure across the world not just in India or Telangana. While New York required 30,000 ventilators, they have only 11,000. “Fortunately, we don’t require ventilators in huge numbers and have enough ventilators now. Our CM has also said the doubling is about 10 days, while the country’s average is 8 days,” the minister said.
