NOIDA: The
Wildlife Institute of India (WII) has developed a bilingual
Lockdown Wildlife Tracker (LWT) following several reports on social media platforms about animal sightings in urban areas. With the application, such sightings can be reported on a real time basis.
Currently, the app can be downloaded from the website of WII (https://wii.gov.in/ lockdown_wildlife_tracker). But soon, it can be downloaded on Android phones.
The idea is to maintain a database for human-wildlife interaction, officials said.
While on March 27, a Nilgai was spotted near GIP Mall in Noida’s Sector 37, a deer was seen at a park in Sector 91 recently. Residents have seen owls in balconies in Sector 119, and many rare birds are being spotted by residents.
“When we are locked up inside our homes, more and more reports of wild animals exploring human-dominated areas or ‘rewilding’ urban areas are coming in. Because these sightings are very critical to the understanding of
human-wildlife interface in the country, the WII has developed the application for Android users,” said Dr Bilal Habib, scientist from WII who is part of the team that developed the app.
