Delhi: Corporations fine 53 for spitting in the open

NEW DELHI: The city may be battling the novel coronavirus pandemic under a strict lockdown, but some Delhiites are still not taking the government’s warnings seriously and continuing to engage in spitting and urinating in public spaces.
While field teams from North Delhi Municipal Corporation found 33 instances of people spitting and urinating in public places, South Delhi Municipal Corporation caught 17 people engaged in similar activity and issued on-the-spot fine of Rs 1,000 each as per the new regulations.
The East Delhi Municipal Corporation, meanwhile, issued challans to three people for spitting at public spaces.
All violators in south Delhi were found in south zone, while the rest of the three zones under SDMC are yet to taken any action. Data released by the civic body showed that on Monday, four challans each for spitting and urinating were issued in Greater Kailash, Vasant Kunj, Chhatarpur and Lado Sarai.
North corporation commissioner Varsha Joshi said that of the 33 challans issued, one has been realised while all other have been referred to the magistrate for further process. She added that vigorous publicity is being undertaken through pamphlets and public announcements.
Additional commissioner Rashmi Singh said staffers have been oriented by DCPs and drives initiated with audio messages being relayed through garbage collecting auto tippers.
