MYSURU: Barely hours after a team of health care providers including accredited social health assistant (Asha) workers were attacked in Padarayanapura in Bengaluru late on Sunday, three men in Aleem Nagar, a residential locality in north Mysuru, abused an Asha after she asked them to wear a mask when out in public. Police have booked the three.
Sumaya Firdose, the Asha worker, was on Tuesday comforted by district minister ST Somashekar and medical education minister K Sudhakar, who called on her in the locality and assured her safety.
Sumaya, also resident of the locality, was on her way to work when she noticed the three men – Mehaboob, Kaleel and Zeeshan – in a group on the street. She immediately stopped and suggested that they cover their mouths and noses with masks.
The trio of men, two of who are senior citizens, took exception to the unsolicited advice and began abusing Sumaya. At one point they allegedly threatened her with dire consequences.
The incident occurred around noon on Monday and police say Sumaya was alone at the time. Sumaya immediately rushed to the jurisdictional police station and filed a complaint against the men.
AN Prakash Gowda, deputy commissioner of police (law and order), said both the complainant and the accused are residents of the same locality and live in small houses nearby. He said his staff sought permission from a court and booked a case against the trio under several sections of IPC for abusing an Asha worker.
