In case you’re weary of bingeing on mainstream cinema, it might do good to scout the plethora of regional content that your go-to streaming platforms are now offering—including Marathi movies and shows—known to be one of the most evolved genres of Indian regional cinema. Most of the titles in our line-up below are unique because they’re not your usual larger-than-life Marathi comedies but instead draw their strength from their realistic yet humorous iterations of day-to-day life.

The Zee5 Original is a comedy of errors centred around Vicky, a young photographer who gets caught by his uncle sharing an intimate moment with a woman in public. When his uncle rats him out to the family, Vicky aims to seek revenge but finds himself entangled in a bigger mess.

With comedian Abhish Mathew as part of its cast, the MX Original is a funny and genuine take on the everyday life of the Mumbai police. Contesting the larger-than-life portrayal of cops in mainstream Indian cinema, director Sarang Sathaye says, “The real policeman is very human like us. He wants to bring up his kid and go to his parents-teachers’ meeting. Likewise, there are human sides which we have tried exploring here.”

This slow but endearing watch takes you to the heart of rural Maharashtra where a bull has gone astray. Though the critically lauded film doesn’t offer much in terms of a juicy plot, it’s been commended for its rich texture and realistic portrayal of Maharashtrian village life, conveyed through the everyday sense of humour and rawness of dialect of the characters.

One of the only Netflix Marathi originals, this Madhuri Dixit production is breezy and humorous. As the name echoes, the film seeks to represent the different faces of freedom through a bunch of vivid characters living in a Maharashtrian chawl—a space where privacy is a foreign concept.
