Adam Mercer, 19, was sleeping in his home on Patricia Street in Caversham on Tuesday morning when a Subaru Impreza driven by a 36-year-old Midland man ploughed through the wall, trapping him in his bedroom.

He suffered severe head injuries and was put in an induced coma in the intensive care unit at Royal Perth Hospital.

He is in a critical but stable condition with his family by his bedside.

After hearing the crash, witnesses had rushed to help the teen while others pinned down the driver as he tried to walk away.

“He was trapped, I couldn’t help. He was unconscious but then became conscious trying to get up so I tried to help mum keep him still,” witness Dru Wishart told Nine News Perth’s Kamin Gock.

“He wasn’t near the car, he was pushed up against the wall with rubble on top of him.”

The force of the crash was so powerful, the young man, who studies computer animation at TAFE, was flung from his bed.

It took paramedics almost 30 minutes to bring the student to safety.

As the driver tried to walk away from the scene, neighbours stepped in.

“We pinned this guy on the road until the police came,” neighbour Saurav Aryal said.

Police were called to the scene just before noon and were told three members of the public had detained the driver. He was escorted to hospital for blood tests and remained in police custody on Tuesday night.

The 36-year-old man from Midland has been charged with Driver Failed to Stop and Ensure Assistance Received after Incident Occasioning Grievous Bodily Harm.

He is due to appear before the Midland Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
