Three youths held for assaulting cops

Vasco: The Verna police, on Monday, informed that they have arrested three youths for assaulting police sub-inspector Shridhar Kamat and a police constable Rajesh Naik, attached to the Verna police station, when they were discharging their lawful duty and also for violating the order duly promulgated by the Collector and District Magistrate under Section 144 of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

The police said that the accused Aaron Fernandes (22), Renzil Fernandes (19) and Rivon Fernandes (23), residents of Pazentar, Cortalim, were intercepted by the police patrolling staff attached to Verna police station at Thana, Cortalim at around 1.15 pm, when they were found speeding away on Aprilia scooter, bearing registration no GA-06-Y-1915.

The scooter was being ridden by Aaron Fernandes, the police added.

When the police staff led by Verna PI Harish Madkaikar asked for driving licence and vehicle pass, the accused  got agitated and with their common intention assaulted the police sub-inspector Kamat and police constable Naik, thus causing them bodily injuries, the police said.

Police sub-inspector Kamat also  sustained injuries to his right hand.

The police have registered offences, under Section 353 and Section 188 read with Section 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for using criminal force to deter public servant and also for violating the order issued on March 23 duly promulgated by the Collector and District Magistrate, under Section 144 of CrPC which is in force due to COVID-19 pandemic and knowingly acted in a manner likely to spread the disease dangerous to human life. 

The police have attached the scooter which was used by the accused. Further investigation is in progress under the supervision of PI Madkaikar.
