Coronavirus in Tamil Nadu: IIFPT prepares food that can improve patients’ immune system

IIFPT officials hand over food and sanitisers.
THANJAVUR: The Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology (IIFPT) has prepared and supplied nutritious food for improving the immune system of Covid-19 patients in Government Medical College Hospital, Thanjavur.
These foods were handed over to hospital authorities on Tuesday.
Thanjavur-based IIFPT is a national-level research and development and educational institute functioning under the Union ministry of food processing industries. The institute undertakes research in food processing, nutrition and food safety amid offering academic programmes in food technology. It is equipped with accredited hi-tech laboratories for testing quality of food.
“We prepared various snacks, including 250 loaves of bread, 150 packs of cookies and 350 packs of enriched millet pops, for patients under medical observation. These foods will help improve the immune system of the patients,” IIFPT director Dr C Anandharamakrishnan said.
The breads and cookies contain 9.0% protein and 8.3% fibre. Moringa leaves in them will provide dietary fibre and vitamins. Natural immune boosters such as, turmeric, ginger, garlic and pepper are incorporate. These foods are free from transfat and synthetic additives.
In addition, the IIFPT is supplying hand sanitisers to the police department.
All these are supplied free of cost.
