Adelaide Crows have suspended Tyson Stengle for four AFL games and fined him $2,500 after he was caught drink driving.

Crows forward Tyson Stengle was pulled over by police on Thursday April 9 allegedly driving an unregistered car in Adelaide's south-western suburbs and blew 0.125.

The 21-year-old released a statement on Tuesday apologising for 'what were some poor decisions'.

'I know that I have let a lot of people down,' Stengle said.

'I am determined to win back the trust of my teammates and coaches, and that starts with focussing on my training and working hard.'

The Adelaide football club faced a raft of scrutiny for not publicly disclosing the incident until April 18.

But board member Rod Jameson said the 21-year-old failed to inform the club when the incident happened.

'Tyson didn't inform the club until two, nearly three, days post the incident taking place so it happened in the early hours of Thursday morning and we weren't informed until Saturday afternoon,' Mr Jameson told ABC Grandstand on Sunday.

'Then it goes through a bit of a process.'

Crows CEO Andrew Fagan said Stengle's delay in reporting the incident to the club was a factor when determining his sanction.

'We probably strengthened the sanction in this situation because Tyson was slow in relaying the information to us. He knows it was a significant mistake he made and is remorseful,' Mr Fagan said on SEN's Dwayne's World.

'We're conscious of making sure he's OK and has the appropriate support around him, but equally there's consequences for mistakes and he's copped this one squarely.'

Mr Fagan defended the club's decision to keep quiet on the incident as they wanted to 'investigate the incident properly'.

'We wanted to investigate the incident properly and try and get the appropriate information from the authorities and it took us a little bit of time,' he said.

'The fact that we took four or five days after him notifying us is not a significant issue at all. We've been very open on what's occurred.'
