This lockdown business is slowly but surely starting to take its toll on me.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for it, but it's just that much worse when you're used to weekend drives and exploring the small towns and roads outside the city.

Even if it's just driving over Clarence Drive with the ocean and mountain on either side, that's enough. At least it's the road and me, interacting and engaging. For the last month, however, the only 'road trips' I undertook was to the shop for essential goods.

Audi, it seems, is also missing being out and about and took their A6 for a drive through the Australian countryside. To make the most of the opportunity, Audi and its partner agency took to the road and filmed a four-hour-long road trip.

The video contains just about everything you'd experience on a road trip: sunny weather, long twisting roads, rain, and little towns.

Hitting the road

I so badly want to hit the road, but obtaining a permit (let's call it a pass, okay?) is not an option.

So this is what I’m going to do: I will wait out the next two weeks and hope that our president will make an announcement that'll fall on my ears like fresh morning dew. And once he lifts the lockdown - even ever so slightly - I'll take a day just to drive. Drive like I have no care in the world.

I don't even know where, but Franschhoek Pass could be on the menu. Maybe one of the back roads connecting the N2 and Bredasdorp. Ooh, perhaps I'll take a bakkie or SUV (one made for gravel and not the pavement) and do a 400km off-road excursion. Everything in a day! My mind is racing as I envision how my ventures will go!

Winter weather

At the moment, Cape Town is experiencing its first winter rains. It's not much, but it's falling. I can already see myself driving through the countryside, chewing on biltong and droëwors, and drinking coke while the rain is crashing down on me.

Maybe I'll wind the windows down, decrease my speed and allow the fresh, moist air to cling on my arm. Having the smell of fresh rain and wet gravel tickle my nose as I trot along towards nowhere.

This would be awesome, but it can - and WILL - come to fruition when uncle Cyril makes the right noises. If not, then we wait. And wait we shall.
