It's now been over a month since Nintendo released "Animal Crossing: New Horizons," but that doesn't mean that its fans have stopped being obsessed with it. In fact, the fandom fixation has only ramped up in recent weeks, and while many are turning their creative tools towards creating the perfect island, others are turning their energy towards a recent trend in which artists put Animal Crossing's favorite pop star, K.K. Slider, into iconic album covers.
K.K. Slider is a dog musician who appears in every Animal Crossing title to date, performing concerts for the player and villagers. Given that K.K. Slider has been a part of the franchise for so long, he's easily one of its best-known and most popular characters. His synthetic voice is iconic: YouTubers like Clay Kramer have created K.K. Slider covers of popular tracks like Billie Eilish's "Bad Guy" or Foster The People's "Pumped Up Kicks," but artists on TikTok and Twitter are now taking it a step further.
The album art challenge appears to have originated from TikTok user @annqell, who posted a video on April 11 challenging artists to redraw their favorite album featuring K.K. Slider. At a certain point, the challenge crossed over to Twitter after user @HellGlazer reposted a TikTok from @ajemtattoo featuring their art of a K.K. slider version of My Chemical Romance's "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge" on April 16. At that point, the challenge began to spread across Twitter, becoming prolific around April 20 and 21.
