A 22-year-old daily wage worker, Rizwan Ahmed, died in Uttar Pradesh's Ambedkar Nagar distrct on Saturday, three days after he was allegedly beaten up by the police when he stepped out to buy food during the lockdown period, The Hindu reported.

In his complaint, Rizwan's father Ismail said he had gone out in the Chajjapur locality of Ambedkar Nagar at around 4 pm on April 15 to buy household goods. A relative of Rizwan told The Hindu that he had gone out to buy biscuits as he was hungry.

When Rizwan reached the local post-office, he was stopped by a female inspector and and a few other constables, his father said. Police then beat him indiscriminately by lathis, leaving him bruised and badly injured, Ismail said.

Afraid of violating the lockdown, the family treated him at home using 'desi' remedies. As his situation did not improve, they took him to a local hospital in Asopur but doctors referred him to the district hospital where he eventually died.

Avanish Kumar Mishra, Additional SP, told The Hindu that allegations against the Police are being probed and action will be taken after the post-mortem report is out.
