On Friday, Christie Anastasia spoke on behalf of Acadia Park authorities and mentioned that closure of all park services will be extended a month beyond the usual, gradual start-up of park operations with the summer tourist season. This would include shut down the extension of the Park Loop Road — including Ocean Drive — and other park facilities, including restrooms, carriage roads, campgrounds, visitor centers, and visitor services.
She mentioned that the Acadia National Park ban should continue keeping in mind the growing numbers of positive coronavirus cases in Maine as well as the U.S. She even said that the park would re‐evaluate the tentative dates presently provided and potentially delay them further if the pandemic emergency continues.
In addition, Hulls Cove Visitor Center that was scheduled to open on May 1 would now open on June 1, according to the new decision. Park campgrounds normally set to open at varying times ranging between May 1 and May 21, will open on June 15, 2020. Sieur de Monts Visitor Center, which was set to open on the first Saturday in May, will open on June 15. The operation of park concessioner services and operations may also be delayed.
Park officials are responding to concerns expressed by state and local officials working to curb the spread of the coronavirus by extending the total ban on visitors to the park. This would further allow people to maintain social distancing measures and avoid mass gathering. The park will also contact and issue refunds to campers who have booked the park for camping in advance.
